When
a jar filled with cash was stolen from a restaurant in a small Central
California town, the restaurant owners and customers were shocked and
dismayed.
This was not an ordinary jar sitting on the counter for the purpose of
leaving a tip – this was a special jar, filled with heartfelt notes and
monetary donations for a very special little girl, 6-year-old Madelyn
“Maddy” Gonzales, our I Feel the Love Project March 2014 card recipient.
Diagnosed
in the fall of 2013 with acute lymphocytic leukemia, Maddy often
travels with her family – mom, dad, and older sister – for treatments.
The stolen jar of cash,
filled with donations from community members, would have helped to
offset some of the expenses incurred by the family.
“I was sad when I found out,” Jessica Gonzales said. “Just to know
that there’s people out there that would do something like that. I’m not
naïve, and I know things like this happen, but when it directly affects
my daughter, well, it’s just sad.” And what was Maddy’s reaction when she heard the news a few days later?
“She said ‘That’s just stupid!’ when I told her what had happened,”
Gonzales said. “Then she said she was sorry for using a bad word; she
doesn’t like saying ‘stupid.’ She’s a sweet little girl and for this
theft to happen was just not right.”
I Feel the Love Project- March 2014
After
reading Maddy's story, we knew that she was our girl for our March
project. The exciting news for me is that for the first time since
project #1 (June 2011), this is a local project for me and I get to hand
deliver the box of goodies to Maddy. That will be an extra special
day!
Please join us this month as we create handcrafted greetings cards to send to Maddy. If you would like to be a part of this month's project:
All you need to do is:
Submit your hand crafted card/s by April 1st to:
